Alebrijes are a form of Mexican folk art, invented by Pedro Linares and characteristic of the state of Oaxaca. Alebrijes are generally small animals (mythical or not) made from papier mache or carved wood, painted with intense colors and intricate patterns. In this program, participants will learn about the history and culture behind alebrijes and related Mexican folk art and explore Latin American color theory/aesthetics. Participants will paint a papier mache animal to create their own alebrije.
